Since 1975, over 40 states have created pharmaceutical assistance programs for the elderly, underinsured, and uninsured. These programs offer varying benefits and eligibility criteria, and have played a substantial role in helping patients that don't qualify for other state or federal assistance programs.
Due to Medicare Part D drug benefit, many of these programs are ending or changing how they operate. The National Conference of State Legislatures website contains useful information about these drug assistance programs.
